Allen's Purple Rain - Fall

$20.00

Some dahlias are made to blend beautifully into a bouquet, and others are made to stop people in their tracks. Allen’s Purple Rain definitely falls into the second category.

The first thing you notice is the color—a deep, true purple that has real richness in the field. Then you notice the petals. Each bloom is filled with finely split, laciniated petals that give the flower a wild, almost fireworks-like texture. At around 8 inches across, these are substantial blooms, but all of that movement keeps them from ever feeling heavy.

This is one I reach for when a market bouquet needs something unexpected. A single stem can completely change the personality of the bunch, especially mixed with softer lavender, blush, burgundy or even warm peach tones. It is also a wonderful flower to offer local florists because that unusual form gives designers something they simply cannot recreate with more traditional ball or decorative dahlias.

For wedding work, I think of Purple Rain as an accent rather than a filler. A few of these blooms tucked into a larger arrangement bring drama, movement and texture without needing a huge quantity. It is especially striking in moody late-summer and fall palettes where deeper colors can really shine.

The plant itself reaches roughly 4 feet tall and produces blooms on long stems, another reason it earns its place in a cutting garden.

Allen’s Purple Rain is a great choice for the gardener or collector who wants something beyond the perfectly rounded dahlia—bold color, unusual texture and a bloom that looks just as interesting up close as it does from across the garden.
