Apple Blossom - Fall
Apple Blossom
Apple Blossom is one of those dahlias that feels more like a flower you might stumble across in an old cottage garden than something deliberately bred and planted in rows. Its creamy butter-yellow petals are brushed with soft blush pink, surrounding a delicate inner collar and an open golden center. Every bloom feels light, romantic and just a little bit different.
I love growing open-centered dahlias because they bring something completely different to the cutting field. Among all of the perfectly rounded balls and densely petaled decorative varieties, Apple Blossom gives the eye somewhere to rest. The blooms have movement, softness and an almost wildflower quality that can make an arrangement feel instantly more natural.
For our market bouquets, I use Apple Blossom when I want the bunch to feel garden-grown rather than overly structured. It mixes beautifully with blush, cream, peach, soft yellow and dusty rose, and that warm golden center ties especially well into late-summer flowers and grasses.
This is also one of those dahlias I am always happy to have available when wedding season arrives. The soft coloring is made for romantic bridal bouquets, bud vases and garden-inspired centerpieces. Its open shape adds air between larger focal flowers, and the long stems make it wonderfully useful at the design table.
There is another reason I enjoy seeing Apple Blossom in the field: those exposed centers invite bees, butterflies and other pollinators in for a visit. It is a flower that feels alive in every sense—beautiful to cut, beautiful to design with, and beautiful left growing in the garden.
For anyone who loves dahlias with a soft, romantic personality and a looser, more natural garden style, Apple Blossom is a variety I would happily grow year after year.
