Arena's Sunset - Fall
Arena’s Sunset is one of those dahlias that seems to glow when the late-afternoon sun hits it. The blooms carry a warm mix of yellow, orange and red tones, with just enough variation from petal to petal to give the flower real depth. It feels exactly like its name suggests—a little piece of sunset tucked into the dahlia row.
What makes this variety especially fun for me is the laciniated form. The petals split and curl at the tips, giving each bloom a feathery, almost spark-like texture. It has much more movement than a traditional decorative dahlia, and that makes it incredibly useful when a bouquet needs something a little less structured.
In our market bouquets, Arena’s Sunset is a natural fit as summer begins to transition into fall. I love it alongside golden yellows, rust, burgundy, peach and deeper reds, but it can also bring warmth to softer cream and blush combinations. Those fiery little blooms have a way of making the rest of the bouquet feel more seasonal without immediately turning it into an autumn arrangement.
It is also a fun stem to send to our local florists. The miniature size makes it easy to tuck into detailed designs, while the unusual petals add texture that stands out among more traditional dahlias. For weddings, I especially like it in late-summer celebrations where the couple wants warmth, movement and a touch of unexpected color.
Even with hundreds of dahlias growing in the field, I am always drawn to varieties that bring something different to the bucket. Arena’s Sunset does exactly that—warm color, intricate petals and a personality that feels a little wild around the edges.
For the gardener who loves rich sunset tones and unusual flower forms, this is a variety that is just as interesting to study up close as it is beautiful in a vase.
