Bloomquist Pinwheel - Fall
Bloomquist Pinwheel is one of those dahlias that looks like it is in motion even when the air is completely still. The narrow petals sweep and curl around the center in a distinct pinwheel pattern, giving the bloom a playful, almost spinning appearance.
The color is equally eye-catching. Although officially classified as lavender, the blooms often read much more like saturated fuchsia, hot pink, or dragon-fruit pink, with darker petal backs adding another layer of depth. That richness makes it feel bolder than many traditional lavender dahlias.
At around 4 inches across, Bloomquist Pinwheel is a wonderfully workable size for cutting. The stellar form gives the flower plenty of visual interest without the heaviness of a larger decorative dahlia, and the unusual shape adds immediate movement to a bouquet.
In our market bouquets, I love using Pinwheel when a bunch needs a little energy. It pairs beautifully with blush, lavender, raspberry, burgundy, cream, and softer pinks, and the bright fuchsia tones can completely wake up an otherwise muted palette.
For our local florists, this is the kind of stem that stands out because of form as much as color. The swirling petals create texture and movement alongside more traditional ball and decorative dahlias, making it especially useful in garden-style designs where I want the flowers to feel collected rather than overly uniform.
I also enjoy it for wedding work when a bride wants pink or lavender but is looking for something with more personality. Mixed with dusty rose and mauve it feels romantic; paired with deeper berry and wine tones it becomes much more dramatic.
What I appreciate most about Bloomquist Pinwheel is that it has a very recognizable look. With so many dahlias in the field, it is always nice to have a variety that I can identify from several rows away.
For the gardener who loves saturated pink-lavender color, unusual stellar petals, and a dahlia with unmistakable movement, Bloomquist Pinwheel is a fun and distinctive variety to grow.
