Hollyhill Pollyanna - Fall
Hollyhill Pollyanna is one of those dahlias that becomes more valuable the longer you grow it. Its beautifully rounded miniature ball blooms open in a soft lavender that can shift toward lilac, dusty mauve, or pink-lavender depending on the light and growing conditions. The color is gentle, but never dull, and that subtle variation is a big part of what makes it so easy to use.
The miniature ball form gives each bloom a tidy, almost perfectly rounded shape, with tightly arranged petals creating plenty of texture. At roughly 3–4 inches across, the flowers are an ideal size for cutting: substantial enough to be noticed, but compact enough to tuck easily into mixed bouquets, centerpieces, bridal work, and smaller detail pieces.
In our market bouquets, Hollyhill Pollyanna is one of those varieties I can use in almost any direction. It is beautiful alongside blush, cream, dusty rose, soft pink, and pale yellow, but it also works surprisingly well with richer plum, burgundy, raspberry, and wine tones. The lavender color can either soften a bouquet or help bridge cooler and warmer shades together.
For local florists, that versatility is where this variety really shines. The rounded form gives designs structure, while the soft lavender coloring acts almost like a neutral. It can support romantic palettes, add contrast to deeper arrangements, or bring a little coolness into peach, blush, and rose combinations without feeling disconnected.
Hollyhill Pollyanna is especially useful in wedding work. It fits naturally into soft garden-inspired bridal bouquets, layered mauve and blush centerpieces, all-white designs that need just a hint of color, or richer berry-toned arrangements where the lavender provides breathing room. It is one of those dahlias that can move from ceremony flowers to reception centerpieces without ever feeling out of place.
As a flower farmer, I also appreciate varieties that are more than just beautiful in one perfect bloom. Pollyanna offers a useful combination of manageable bloom size, strong visual texture, and a color that works across an unusually wide range of palettes. That makes it the kind of dahlia I am happy to see coming into production when market orders, florist buckets, and weddings are all competing for stems.
There is also something timeless about it. Ted and Margaret Kennedy introduced so many memorable Hollyhill varieties, and Pollyanna has the kind of balanced beauty that explains why it remains so widely grown today.
For the gardener who loves soft lavender/pink color, beautifully rounded blooms, and a dahlia that can move effortlessly from the cutting garden to nearly any style of arrangement, Hollyhill Pollyanna is an exceptionally versatile variety to grow.
