Honey Dew - Fall
Honey Dew
Honey Dew is one of those dahlias whose color is much softer and more interesting than simply calling it yellow. The blooms open in a warm blend of honey-gold, buttery yellow, and soft cantaloupe-peach, giving the flower a creamy, almost sorbet-like quality that seems to glow in the field.
Its formal decorative form gives the blooms a beautifully full, layered appearance, with broad petals arranged around a strong center. Depending on growing conditions, the flowers generally fall in the 4–7 inch range, giving Honey Dew enough size to work as a focal bloom without becoming difficult to use in a bouquet.
In our market bouquets, Honey Dew is one of those varieties I reach for when I want warmth without a bright primary yellow. It pairs beautifully with peach, blush, cream, soft pink, rust, burgundy, and other warm garden tones. The cantaloupe undertones make it surprisingly easy to move between summer and early-fall palettes.
For our local florists, this is exactly the kind of color that becomes more useful once you start designing with it. It can brighten an arrangement without taking over, bridge peach and yellow tones together, or bring a soft golden glow to more romantic palettes. The stems are well suited to cutting, and Swan Island specifically notes strong laterals and excellent cut-flower performance.
I especially like Honey Dew for wedding work because it gives me a warm neutral that is neither cream nor orange. In blush-and-peach designs it feels soft and romantic, while in richer rust, wine, and burgundy palettes it adds light and keeps the arrangement from becoming too heavy.
Another fun trait is that Honey Dew can occasionally throw a red petal—or even an entirely red bloom—without the whole plant permanently changing. It is one of those little quirks that makes growing dahlias endlessly interesting.
What I appreciate most about Honey Dew is how easy it is to use. The color is gentle, the bloom is substantial, and it moves beautifully between market bouquets, florist buckets, and wedding designs.
For the gardener who loves soft golden color, full decorative blooms, and a dahlia that feels warm without being overly bright, Honey Dew is a beautiful and versatile variety to grow.
