Jessie G - Fall
Jessie G is the kind of dahlia that earns its space in the field year after year.
The blooms are a rich mix of burgundy, plum, maroon, and deep purple, with enough depth that they can look almost black cherry in certain light. It is one of those dark dahlias that immediately adds contrast to a bouquet without feeling harsh or overly red.
The ball-form blooms are generally around 3–4 inches across, with tightly arranged petals and a beautifully rounded shape. That size is incredibly useful for cutting because the flowers have enough presence to anchor a bouquet while still tucking easily between larger focal blooms.
In our market bouquets, Jessie G is one of those varieties I reach for whenever something needs more depth. It works beautifully with blush, dusty rose, mauve, cream, peach, raspberry, burgundy, and softer lavender tones. Just a few stems can make the lighter colors around them look richer.
For our local florists, Jessie G brings together everything I want in a dependable cutting dahlia: strong stems, excellent production, useful bloom size, and a color that works across a wide range of palettes.
That durability makes it especially valuable for market sales and wedding work. Dark dahlias can sometimes be temperamental in intense summer sun, but Jessie G has built a long reputation as a variety that continues producing usable stems throughout the season.
I especially love it for weddings when the palette includes burgundy, wine, mauve, dusty rose, blush, or plum. Because the bloom is relatively compact, I can repeat that deep color throughout an arrangement without making the design feel heavy.
Jessie G also has impressive staying power as a cultivar. It was introduced by Les Connell in 1994, earned the Stanley Johnson Medal in 1998, and decades later it is still winning ball classes at ADS shows. That is a pretty good indication that this older variety has earned its reputation.
What I appreciate most about Jessie G is that it does not make us choose between beauty and performance. The color is rich, the stems are excellent, and the plant keeps producing when we need it most.
For the gardener who loves deep burgundy-plum flowers and wants a proven dahlia that works hard in the cutting garden, Jessie G is an easy variety to recommend.
