Jowey Joshua - Fall
Jowey Joshua is one of those dahlias that brings warmth and contrast to the field at the same time. The blooms combine deep brick red with creamy golden-yellow on the reverse of the petals, creating a rich bicolor effect that becomes even more noticeable as the flower opens.
Its ball form is beautifully rounded and tightly packed, with the petals arranged in a tidy, almost honeycomb-like pattern. At approximately 3½–4 inches across, Jowey Joshua is a wonderfully practical size for cutting—large enough to carry color in a bouquet, but compact enough to layer easily with larger focal flowers and softer textures.
In our market bouquets, this is the kind of variety I reach for when I want warmth without relying on a straightforward orange or red. The golden underside of the petals keeps the deeper red from feeling too heavy, and the bloom pairs beautifully with cream, peach, rust, burgundy, golden yellow, and softer blush tones.
For our local florists, Jowey Joshua offers both structure and color variation. The rounded form gives arrangements a polished shape, while the contrasting petal colors add dimension without requiring a more unusual flower form. It is especially useful in late-summer and early-fall palettes where several warm shades are layered together.
I also like it for wedding work when the palette calls for depth with a little brightness. In a rust-and-burgundy design it feels rich and seasonal; mixed with peach, cream, and soft gold, the yellow reverse becomes much more noticeable and gives the flower an almost glowing quality.
The plants are also known for sturdy stems and strong production, which makes this more than just an interesting bicolor. It is the kind of dahlia that can move easily from the field into market bouquets, florist buckets, and event work without becoming difficult to use.
What I appreciate most about Jowey Joshua is the way the two colors work together. The bloom has the richness of red, the warmth of gold, and the tidy structure of a classic ball dahlia—all in one very useful flower.
For the gardener who loves warm bicolor blooms, beautifully rounded form, and a dahlia that brings both structure and personality to the vase, Jowey Joshua is a wonderful variety to grow.
