Kassagi - Fall

Kasasagi is one of those little dahlias that proves you do not need a huge bloom to make an impression. Its petite pompon flowers are packed tightly into nearly perfect little spheres, with warm golden-yellow petals deepening toward rich rust-red and scarlet at the tips. The overall effect feels almost like glowing embers.

At only about 2 inches across, Kasasagi brings a completely different scale to the cutting bucket. That smaller size is incredibly useful when I am building market bouquets because it gives me a way to add strong color and texture without introducing another large focal flower.

In our market bouquets, I especially love Kasasagi as summer begins leaning toward fall. Its gold-and-red flame coloring looks beautiful with peach, cream, rust, burgundy, orange, and deeper reds, but the small bloom size keeps those richer colors from feeling too heavy. A handful of stems scattered through a bouquet can completely change the finished look.

For our local florists, pompons like this are incredibly useful. The blooms create repetition and rhythm in an arrangement, and the strong contrast between yellow and red gives designers several colors to pull through the rest of the flowers. At roughly 3 feet tall, Kasasagi is a relatively compact dahlia, yet still produces stems that work well for cutting.

I also like it for wedding work, particularly in late-summer and autumn designs. The little blooms tuck beautifully into centerpieces, bud vases, bouquets, and more detailed pieces where a larger dahlia simply would not fit. They can add warmth to peach-and-cream florals or bring another layer of texture to richer burgundy and rust palettes.

There is also something especially appealing about growing a variety that has stood the test of time. Kasasagi was introduced in 1960 and originated in Japan, yet more than sixty years later growers are still making room for it in their gardens. Its original hybridizer does not appear to be reliably documented in current references.

What I appreciate most about Kasasagi is how much personality comes from such a small flower. The coloring is warm, the form is wonderfully tidy, and those little two-toned blooms become incredibly useful once cutting season gets busy.

For the gardener who loves petite flowers, rich flame coloring, and heirloom dahlias that bring something genuinely different to the vase, Kasasagi is a charming variety to grow.
