Mission Zest - Fall
Mission Zest is one of those dahlias that brings warmth to a bouquet without ever feeling loud. The blooms open in the prettiest pale apricot to soft orange, sometimes leaning peachier or more bronze depending on the light and stage of the flower.
Its miniature formal decorative form is especially satisfying. The petals are neatly layered around a beautifully closed center, creating a polished little bloom that looks almost sculpted. At roughly 2½–4 inches across, Mission Zest is an ideal size for cutting—small enough to tuck easily between larger focal flowers, but substantial enough to bring real color and structure to an arrangement.
In our market bouquets, this is the kind of dahlia I reach for when I want warmth without heading straight into bright orange. It pairs beautifully with cream, blush, peach, dusty rose, rust, burgundy, and softer golden tones, and it has a way of making a bouquet feel sun-warmed rather than overly autumnal.
For our local florists, Mission Zest is especially useful because it combines a compact bloom size with a color that works across so many palettes. The formal decorative shape brings structure, while the soft apricot-orange coloring can bridge peach, bronze, coral, and rust in the same design.
I especially like it for wedding work. Mission Zest fits naturally into terracotta, peach, blush, cream, and warm neutral palettes, and its smaller bloom size makes it easy to use in bridal bouquets, centerpieces, bud vases, and more detailed floral work.
The plants are also notably productive. Several growers describe them as being covered in blooms throughout the season, which makes Mission Zest the kind of variety that earns its place in a working cutting field rather than simply looking pretty in the garden.
What I appreciate most about Mission Zest is how easy it is to use. The color is warm but refined, the form is tidy, and the smaller bloom size gives me endless options once it reaches the design table.
For the gardener who loves soft apricot color, beautifully structured blooms, and a dahlia that works effortlessly in warm garden-inspired palettes, Mission Zest is a wonderful variety to grow.
