Molly Raven - Fall
Molly Raven is one of those dahlias that looks almost painted rather than grown.
The petals begin with a soft coffee-pink base and are layered with streaks, stippling, and deeper fuchsia-to-raspberry tones. Depending on the bloom and the stage of maturity, the flowers can shift between dusty rose, mauve, coffee, magenta, and deeper burgundy shades. The reverse of the petals often carries a richer red tone, giving the flower even more dimension when the petals curl and overlap.
That coloring is only part of what makes Molly Raven special.
The plants carry dark stems and dark foliage, creating beautiful contrast before a single bloom is even cut. In the field, that darker foliage makes the flowers look especially luminous; in the vase, the dark stems bring a subtle moodiness that works beautifully in more sophisticated floral palettes. The RHS specifically describes Molly Raven as having dark red stems and dark green foliage, with pale coffee and pink-striped flowers.
The blooms are decorative and generally fall around 4–6 inches, although some growers report flowers closer to 4 inches. That is an ideal size for cutting—large enough to act as a focal bloom, but still manageable enough to use throughout a bouquet or centerpiece.
In our market bouquets, Molly Raven is exactly the kind of flower I love working with because it refuses to be just one color. It can bridge blush, mauve, dusty rose, burgundy, raspberry, cream, and even warmer mocha tones without making the bouquet feel overly coordinated.
For our local florists, it is an especially exciting variety because the flowers bring both color and texture. The striping gives every bloom individuality, while the dark stems add another design element that you simply do not get from most dahlias.
And this one was practically made for wedding work.
Molly Raven is stunning in romantic, moody palettes built around mauve, wine, dusty rose, blush, burgundy, and cream. It can be soft enough for a bridal bouquet while still carrying enough depth to hold its own in richer centerpiece work.
Sarah Raven also specifically highlights Molly Raven for its vase life and vigor, calling it one of the strongest-performing selections from their dahlia trials. That is exactly the kind of trait I want in a flower that needs to perform across markets, florist orders, and weddings.
What I appreciate most about Molly Raven is that it feels both elegant and a little unexpected. The coloring is refined, the dark foliage is beautiful, and no two blooms seem to carry the striping in exactly the same way.
For the gardener who loves dusty rose, coffee, mauve, raspberry, and richly striped blooms with dark foliage, Molly Raven is a striking variety to grow.
