Ms Doris - Fall
There are some white dahlias that are beautiful in the garden but difficult to rely on when it is time to actually cut and design with them. Ms Doris is not one of those flowers.
This is a beautifully clean white miniature ball with tightly arranged petals and an exceptionally polished form. The blooms are around 3 inches across, giving them enough presence to be noticed while remaining small enough to tuck effortlessly between larger focal flowers.
That size is exactly what makes Ms Doris so valuable in our cutting field.
In our market bouquets, white dahlias are endlessly useful, and Ms Doris gives me a way to add brightness and structure without introducing a large bloom that takes over the entire arrangement. It works beautifully with nearly every color we grow—blush, peach, lavender, burgundy, coral, dusty rose, yellow, and deeper jewel tones.
For our local florists, this is the kind of white dahlia I can imagine disappearing from the bucket quickly. The flowers are clean and refined, but the plant also produces the long, strong stems and abundance of blooms that designers actually need.
And for wedding work, Ms Doris is exceptionally useful.
A true white mini-ball can move through an entire wedding design—from bridal bouquets and boutonnieres to bud vases, centerpieces, ceremony flowers, and larger installations. The smaller scale allows white to be repeated throughout the design without every bloom competing to become a focal flower.
It is also an excellent companion to larger white dahlias. Mixed with waterlilies, decorative forms, roses, lisianthus, or soft greenery, those little rounded blooms add rhythm and texture while keeping the palette beautifully cohesive.
The plants grow around 40–48 inches tall, with a strong branching habit that supports plenty of usable cutting stems. That compact-to-medium height also makes Ms Doris easier to manage than some of the towering varieties we grow.
This one also comes with significant exhibition credentials. Before its 2025 release, Ms Doris performed extremely well in the American Dahlia Society trial gardens and went on to earn the 2024 Derrill W. Hart Medal for its miniature ball form.
What I appreciate most about Ms Doris is that it combines everything I want from a white cut-flower dahlia: beautiful form, genuinely useful size, strong stems, heavy production, and a color that fits nearly every bouquet we make.
For the gardener who wants a crisp white dahlia that works just as hard in the cutting garden as it does in wedding flowers, Ms Doris is an outstanding variety to grow.
