River's Vesuvius - Fall

$18.00

River’s Vesuvius looks every bit as dramatic as its name suggests.

The blooms are a fiery mix of red, scarlet, and deeper crimson tones, with long, narrow petals that twist and curl outward from the center. The overall effect is almost explosive—less like a perfectly sculpted flower and more like a burst of flame frozen in place.

At approximately 6–8 inches across, the blooms have real presence. The incurved cactus form gives them height and movement without making them feel heavy, and those narrow petals create a completely different texture from the ball and decorative dahlias growing around them.

In our market bouquets, River’s Vesuvius is the kind of flower I use when a bouquet needs energy. It works beautifully with burgundy, raspberry, blush, cream, rust, orange, and deeper red tones, and a single stem can completely change the personality of an arrangement.

For our local florists, the appeal is all about shape. The long, pointed petals give designers something architectural to work with, while the strong red color creates immediate impact.

I also love it for bold wedding work. River’s Vesuvius fits naturally into rich burgundy-and-red palettes, but it can also create beautiful contrast against blush, peach, champagne, and cream. In late-summer and fall weddings, that fiery coloring feels especially at home.

The plants grow to around 4½ feet, which gives us useful stem length for cutting and larger design work. River’s Dahlias describes the flower as a unique addition to the garden, and I think that is exactly right—this is not a variety that quietly disappears into the background.

What I appreciate most about River’s Vesuvius is that it brings a completely different kind of movement to the bucket. The color is strong, the petals are wild, and the bloom has enough size to command attention without becoming impractical.

For the gardener who loves fiery red color, dramatic pointed petals, and dahlias that bring real motion and personality to an arrangement, River’s Vesuvius is a memorable variety to grow.
