West Coast - Fall

West Coast is one of those dahlias that seems to have every soft, romantic color tucked into a single bloom.

The flowers move through peach, apricot, dusty rose, soft salmon, blush pink, and creamy latte tones, often with a subtle mauve or lavender undertone near the center. Depending on the weather and stage of the bloom, one flower may lean warmer and peachier while another looks softer and more muted.

That color variation is exactly what makes West Coast so beautiful in the cutting field.

The blooms are decorative and generally fall around 5–7 inches across, with layer after layer of petals creating a full, substantial flower without becoming overwhelmingly large. The shape is polished enough for formal work, but the nuanced coloring keeps it feeling soft and garden-inspired.

In our market bouquets, West Coast is incredibly easy to use. It pairs beautifully with cream, blush, peach, dusty rose, mauve, burgundy, raspberry, and soft apricot tones. Because so many of those shades already appear within the flower itself, it can often become the bloom that connects the entire bouquet.

For our local florists, this is exactly the kind of color that disappears from a bucket quickly. Australian growers consistently praise the long, strong stems and excellent cut-flower performance, and that combination of stem quality and sophisticated color makes West Coast especially valuable for design work.

I especially love it for weddings. West Coast fits naturally into blush-and-cream palettes, peach and champagne designs, dusty rose combinations, and richer mauve-and-burgundy weddings. It has enough warmth to keep a design from feeling cool, but the subtle lavender undertones give it far more depth than a straightforward peach dahlia.

The plants are tall, generally around 4½–5 feet, and good growers describe them as productive with sturdy cutting stems. That is exactly what I want from a larger decorative variety—it needs to be beautiful in the field but also practical once cutting season gets busy.

What I appreciate most about West Coast is its ability to shift between colors without ever becoming difficult to design with. It feels romantic, warm, and sophisticated all at once.

For the gardener who loves peach, blush, apricot, dusty rose, and mauve tones—and wants a dahlia that feels made for bouquets and wedding work—West Coast is an exceptional variety to grow.
