Wyn's Farmer Walt - Fall
Wyn’s Farmer Walt is the kind of dahlia that commands attention before you even reach it in the row. The blooms are huge, warm, and glowing, with rich amber-orange petals that seem to catch every bit of late-summer light.
The semi-cactus form gives those oversized blooms plenty of movement. Long, narrow petals curl and point outward, keeping the flower from feeling too heavy even when it stretches to 10 inches or more across. This is definitely a statement dahlia, but it still has that loose, garden-grown character I love in the cutting field.
In our market bouquets, I use Farmer Walt sparingly because one bloom can do a tremendous amount of work. A single stem can anchor an entire bouquet surrounded by peach, rust, burgundy, golden yellow, cream, or deeper reds. It is the kind of flower customers notice immediately when they walk past the market table.
For our local florists, that scale makes it especially useful for large centerpiece work, installations, and statement arrangements. The warm amber-orange coloring also gives designers a beautiful bridge between summer and fall without feeling like a traditional pumpkin orange.
For wedding work, I love Farmer Walt when the palette calls for warmth, drama, and a little personality. It can bring richness to a late-summer celebration or become a showpiece in an autumn design filled with rust, wine, copper, and softer neutral tones.
There is also something especially meaningful about this variety. Wyn’s Farmer Walt was introduced in 2023 in honor of Walt Wynne, the late founder of Wyn’s Dahlias, whose work alongside Cory Wynne helped create an enduring collection of remarkable dahlias. That history gives this flower a little more weight than simply being another beautiful dinnerplate bloom.
For the gardener who loves enormous blooms, warm amber-orange color, and a dahlia with both presence and a wonderful story behind it, Wyn’s Farmer Walt is an unforgettable variety to grow.
